Monopoly jail rules, explained
How you go to jail, the three ways out, whether you collect rent while inside, and why staying in jail can be the better move.
Play KirayaThree ways in
- Landing on the Go to Jail corner.
- Drawing a card that sends you there.
- Rolling doubles three times in a row on one turn.
Going to jail moves you straight there: you do not pass GO and you do not collect salary. Landing on the jail square by an ordinary roll is Just Visiting, which costs nothing.
Three ways out
- Pay the 50 fine before rolling on your next turn.
- Use a Get Out of Jail Free card, from either deck, or buy one from another player.
- Try to roll doubles. You get up to three turns to manage it; roll doubles and you move that roll, but you do not roll again. Fail on the third turn and you pay the 50 and move by that roll anyway.
Life inside
Being in jail does not stop you owning property. Under the printed rules you still collect rent, can buy and sell buildings, mortgage, and trade with the other players while you sit there. Only your token is stuck.
When staying in is the right move
Early in the game, get out fast: unowned property is going cheap and you want to land on it. Late in the game, when the board is full of developed sets, jail is the safest square on the board. You collect rent and land on nothing, so many experienced players roll for doubles deliberately instead of paying.
Jail in Kiraya: the dock
Kiraya's jail is called the dock. You get there the same three ways. To leave, pay ⬡ 75 or try for doubles; after 2 failed attempts you pay the fee and move, and if you are short you pay only what you have, so the dock never bankrupts you. Rent is still collected while you are docked on the standard table.
Questions
Can you collect rent while in jail in Monopoly?
Yes. The printed rules let a jailed player collect rent, build, mortgage and trade. Only movement stops.
How long do you stay in jail in Monopoly?
At most three turns. If you have not rolled doubles by the third, you pay the 50 fine and move by that roll.
Do you collect 200 when you go to jail?
No. Going to jail moves you directly there without passing GO, so no salary is paid.
Do you roll again after rolling doubles out of jail?
No. You move by the doubles that freed you, and your turn ends there.
