What happens when you go bankrupt in Monopoly?
How raising money, owing a player and owing the bank work under the printed rules, and how Kiraya handles bankruptcy differently.
Play KirayaFirst, raise what you can
When you owe more than the cash you hold, you must raise money before you are bankrupt: sell buildings back to the bank at half their cost, mortgage properties, and trade or sell property to other players for whatever they will pay. You are only bankrupt when everything you can raise still does not cover the debt.
Bankrupt to another player
If the debt is to another player, you hand over everything you have left: your cash, your properties and any Get Out of Jail Free cards. Buildings are sold back to the bank first and the money goes to the creditor. Mortgaged property passes still mortgaged, and the new owner must pay the bank interest on it straight away, or pay it off.
Bankrupt to the bank
If the debt is to the bank, from a tax or a card, your property goes to the bank, which auctions it off to the remaining players. Your cash goes to the bank too.
The game ends with one player left
A bankrupt player is out. Under the printed rules the game continues until only one player is left, which is why games can run on long after the result is obvious.
Bankruptcy in Kiraya
Kiraya handles it differently, on purpose. When you go bankrupt your remaining cash goes to whoever you owe, but your properties return to the bank unowned and their buildings are removed, so they come up for sale again rather than handing a rival an instant empire. That keeps a comeback possible for everyone else. With a round limit, the game can also end on net worth before the last bankruptcy.
