How long does a game of Monopoly take?
Why Monopoly games run for hours, which house rules cause it, the official short-game variant, and how to finish in an evening.
Play a quick gameUsually longer than planned
A game played strictly by the printed rules typically takes a couple of hours with four players. Games played with the common house rules often take far longer, and plenty are never finished at all. The length is not a feature of the game so much as of how most people play it.
The three house rules that cause it
| House rule | Why it lengthens the game |
|---|---|
| Money on Free Parking | Puts money back into the game at random, rescuing players who would have gone bankrupt |
| Skipping auctions | Leaves property with the bank, so sets take far longer to assemble |
| Double salary for landing on GO | Adds more money every lap |
Every one of them adds money or delays sets, and the game only ends when money runs out for somebody.
The official short game
The rulebook includes a short-game variant: each player is dealt some properties at the start so sets form sooner, building rules are relaxed, and the game ends at an agreed time, with the richest player on assets winning. Many people do not know it exists.
Finishing in an evening
- Play auctions.
- Drop the Free Parking pot, or cap it.
- Agree a finish time and count net worth when it arrives.
- Trade early: games end when sets are built, and sets come from trades.
How Kiraya handles it
Kiraya has a round limit. The standard table ends after 20 rounds; the host can pick 20, 40 or 60, or none. When the limit arrives, the highest net worth wins, cash plus deeds plus buildings. There is also a turn timer, so nobody can stall, and a Quick Draft option that deals properties out at the start the way the official short game does.
