Does Free Parking pay out in Monopoly?
Under the printed rules Free Parking does nothing. Where the money-in-the-middle house rule comes from, and what it does to the game.
Play KirayaThe printed rule: nothing happens
In the standard rules Free Parking is a resting space. Land on it and nothing is paid, collected or drawn; your turn simply ends. Taxes and fees go to the bank, not into the middle of the board.
The house rule almost everyone plays
The most widespread house rule puts tax and card payments in the middle of the board and gives the pile to whoever lands on Free Parking, sometimes with a starting stake of 500 from the bank. It is so common that many players have never seen the game without it and assume it is in the rulebook.
What it does to the game
Money that would have left the game comes back into it, at random, to whoever happens to land on one square. That keeps players solvent who would otherwise have gone bankrupt, which is exactly why games played this way famously run for hours: the game ends by bankruptcy, and the house rule keeps rescuing the people closest to it. If your games never finish, this rule is the first suspect.
What Kiraya does
Kiraya plays the house rule, openly, as a visible setting. Taxes and fees collect in a vacation pot, and on the standard table the whole pot goes to the player who lands on the rest space. Because that rescue effect is real, the standard table pairs it with a round limit of 20 rounds, so the game still ends with a winner on net worth. The host can switch the pot off, cap it, or change who it pays before the first roll.
